How Long Does a Sliding Door Repair Actually Take?

Technician repairing a sliding door seal

When you're planning your day around a repair appointment, "it depends" isn't a very useful answer. Here's what to realistically expect for the most common jobs, from the technician's arrival to a fully working door.

Roller Replacement: 30–60 Minutes

The most common repair is also the fastest. Once the panel is identified and the correct rollers are on hand, removing the panel, swapping the rollers, and adjusting the height typically takes under an hour.

Track Cleaning or Minor Straightening: 20–45 Minutes

A thorough track cleaning is quick. Minor straightening of a slightly bent section adds some time but is still usually well under an hour. Replacing a full track section takes longer, often 1–2 hours, since it involves removing the panel and reworking the frame channel.

Lock or Handle Repair: 30–75 Minutes

A simple latch or handle swap is fast. Multi-point locking systems take a bit longer to diagnose and adjust correctly since there are multiple engagement points along the frame to align.

Weather Seal and Bottom Rail Replacement: 45–90 Minutes

This involves removing the panel to access the bottom rail and seal channel, so it takes a bit more time than a roller swap, but is still typically a same-visit job.

Glass Panel or Fogged IGU Replacement: 1–3 Hours (or a Follow-Up Visit)

This is the most variable. If the replacement glass unit is a standard size we can source same-day, it's often done in one visit. Custom sizes or specialty glass (impact-rated, tinted, textured) sometimes require ordering the unit first, which means an initial measuring visit followed by a second, shorter installation visit.

What Actually Extends a Visit

The two things that turn a fast repair into a longer one: discovering a second issue once the panel is opened up (e.g. the rollers were the complaint, but the track turns out to be bent too), or needing a part that isn't a standard stock size. Both are explained and quoted before any extra work begins.
