How to Measure Your Sliding Door for an Accurate Repair Quote

A few basic measurements can turn a vague phone quote into an accurate one, and save you a back-and-forth once a technician arrives. Here's exactly what to measure and how, whether you're calling, texting photos, or filling out a quote form.

1. Panel Height and Width

Measure the glass panel itself (not including the frame) from the inside edges, plus the full frame height and width from outer edge to outer edge. This tells us whether you have a standard residential door or an oversized or custom panel, which affects roller and hardware sizing.

2. Number of Panels and Which One Is the Problem

Sliding doors range from a simple two-panel setup to three- or four-panel pocket doors. Note the total panel count and which specific panel is sticking, noisy, or off-track, the fixed panel (that doesn't move) is usually not the culprit.

3. Track Length and Visible Condition

Measure the full length of the bottom track and take a close-up photo. Note any visible bends, corrosion, sand or debris buildup, or gaps where the panel doesn't sit flush, this alone often points straight to the diagnosis.

4. Glass Thickness and Type (If Relevant)

If the issue involves the glass itself, fogging, a crack, or a failed seal, check whether it's a single pane or an insulated (double-pane) unit, and whether it's tinted, tempered, or impact-rated if you know. This isn't always visible from measurements alone, which is why a photo of the edge of the glass (where the spacer between panes is visible) helps.

5. Lock and Handle Style

Take a photo of the lock and handle straight-on. Multi-point locking systems, mortise locks, and basic hook latches are priced and sourced differently, so this photo alone often answers half the diagnostic questions before we arrive.
